Bill shockWhy Is My OpenAI API Bill So High? A 60-Minute Diagnosis
A bigger bill almost always has one of seven causes. Here's how to find yours in an hour, in the order that finds the most money first.
Most high OpenAI bills come from output tokens, uncached repeated prompts, retries and loops, or using a bigger model than the task needs. Check those four first.
1. Split the bill by model (10 minutes)
Open your usage dashboard or export (see how to export OpenAI usage data) and group spend by model. If one model is most of the bill, everything below applies to it first.
2. Compare input and output tokens (5 minutes)
Output usually costs about five times as much as input per token, or more. If output is a large share of spend, look for answers longer than anyone reads, missing max_tokens limits, and reasoning effort set higher than the task needs.
3. Check your cached input share (10 minutes)
OpenAI bills cached input at a fraction of the normal price: GPT-6.1 Sol's cached input is $0.10 per 1M tokens against $2.00 uncached. If your cached share is low, something dynamic sits at the start of your prompts. Read why prompt caching isn't working.
4. Look for retries and loops (10 minutes)
Count requests per user action. If one click makes five calls, find out why: retries on timeouts, agents looping on a tool error, or the same request sent twice by a frontend.
5. Find work that could wait (10 minutes)
Nightly jobs, backfills, evaluations and enrichment don't need instant answers. OpenAI's Batch prices are half the standard prices.
6. Check the model for each call site (10 minutes)
Classification, extraction and routing rarely need your biggest model. Test a cheaper one on 100 real examples before switching.
7. Check for growth you didn't expect (5 minutes)
Sometimes the bill is high because usage grew. Track cost per request, not just the monthly total, so you can tell growth from waste.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common cause of a high OpenAI bill?
Long outputs and repeated prompts that aren't cached. Together they are usually the biggest and easiest savings.
Can I lower my OpenAI bill without changing models?
Yes. Caching, output limits, batching and removing duplicate calls all lower the bill with the same model.
