PlanningHow to Budget LLM Spend for 2027
LLM spend is usage times unit cost, and both move. Budget each separately, and include the price changes you already know about.
Budget usage growth and cost per unit separately, add known 2027 price changes, then set a savings target that brings cost per unit down.
1. Start from cost per unit
Use cost per request, per conversation or per task, not last month's total. See how to calculate cost per request.
2. Forecast usage by driver
Tie usage to customers, seats or transactions, with a low, base and high case.
3. Add known price changes
Some are already announced. Google's pricing page shows Gemini 3.8 Flash doubling from $0.75 / $3.75 to $1.50 / $7.50 per 1M tokens on January 1, 2027, and Gemini 4 Argon doubling on December 1, 2026. See the Gemini price increase.
4. Set a savings target
Caching, batching, output limits and routing typically cut cost per unit without changing quality. Put a target in the budget, such as 20% lower cost per unit by Q1, and an owner.
5. Add a buffer and alerts
Keep a buffer for launches and agent features, and set spend alerts so surprises show up in days, not at month end.
